Celebrating the life and legacy of John McNeill: Conference recordings and memorial appeal

In mid-December, members of the British Archaeological Association and the wider academic community gathered at Rewley House in Oxford to honour a truly foundational figure of our Association: our former secretary and cherished friend, John McNeill.

For those who could not join us in Oxford, you can now watch the conference recordings on our YouTube Channel and on our website

Continuing John’s work: The memorial fund

John served as secretary of the BAA for 24 years, and during his tenure, much of the Association’s growth and transformation can be attributed to his initiatives and leadership. He established the biennial International Romanesque Conference, oversaw the introduction of Study Days, arranged special conferences, all while offering unwavering support to every other officer. He brought remarkable energy to the role of secretary but also quiet efficiency in managing the affairs of the Association. Yet, what we remember most fondly about John is his warmth, kindness, and sense of humour, which touched and inspired everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

To honour this legacy, we are raising money for a dedicated fund in John’s name. These donations will be used exclusively to support the research and professional development of the next generation of scholars—the very people John spent his life encouraging.

If you would like to help us continue John’s work, please consider a donation. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps preserve the future of the scholarship John loved.
