This special evening celebrates the life and work of Jon Cannon (1962–2023) — architectural historian, lecturer, and Canon Historian at Bristol Cathedral. It marks the launch of his final book, The Stones of Britain – a profound exploration of how geology has shaped the landscapes and history of our island. Interwoven with reflections on place, home and belonging, it is Jon’s definitive work and a moving legacy.
The evening will feature readings, tributes, and a drinks reception, offering space to reflect on Jon’s life, scholarship, and influence, including his long-standing involvement with the British Archaeological Association.
Jon joined the BAA in the 1990s and was elected to Council in 2012. He was a generous and perceptive contributor to Council discussions. In February 2017, Jon delivered a BAA lecture entitled ‘When is a Cathedral not a Cathedral? Typologies of Secular and Monastic in the English Great Church’, which remains one of the most viewed talks on the BAA’s YouTube channel. In late 2022, he led a Study Day at St Mary Redcliffe, an event that was oversubscribed and widely praised. It took place just ten weeks before his death, and stands as a testament to his enduring passion, clarity, and generosity as a speaker.
You can read Jon’s obituary in the Journal of the British Archaeological Association here (written by Professor Beth Williamson).
