The late nineteenth century witnessed growing interest in the Scandinavian heritage of the Lake District. One monument in particular piqued the interests of Victorian scholars. Partly due to their efforts, it remains one most famous Anglo-Scandinavian monuments today. This paper reviews early interpretations of the cross and their influence, before attempting a fresh analysis of the sculptural iconography.
