Professor Eric Fernie, CBE

I joined the Association in the 1960s, served on Council in the 1970s, and was made an honorary vice-president in the 1990s. I admire the Association because it maintains the highest scholarly standards and welcomes everyone with an interest in the material past, whether amateur or professional.

My primary area of research is the architectural history of the Middle Ages. I have held posts at the Universities of Witwatersrand, East Anglia, Edinburgh and London. I was director of the Courtauld from 1995 to 2003 and president of the Society of Antiquaries from 2004 to 2007.
